Mindfulness Practices – History, Science, and Daily Life

The intention of this course is to enable participants to establish, renew, and maintain formal and informal mindfulness practices in their daily lives. Drawing upon the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) curriculum, these practices have consistently demonstrated positive outcomes beneficial to beginner and experienced practitioners. Evidence-based effects include greater resilience, healthier coping skills, improved pain management, decreased anxiety and depression, and enhanced well-being.

The key aims of this five-week course are…
1. Introduce and cultivate mindfulness practices including sitting meditation, mindful movement, loving kindness, self-compassion, and the body scan.
2. Explore how to usefully integrate informal mindfulness practices into daily life.
3. Contextualize modern day mindfulness practices with discussions of the history of meditation and mindfulness across time and cultures.
4. Weave findings from psychology, psychotherapy, and neuroscience into our understanding of how and why mindfulness practices are useful in addressing a range of emotional and physical health challenges.
